A practical first estimate can be made using local climate data, the building's annual heating and cooling demand, and the expected operating strategy of the STES system.

Seasonal storage capacity should be estimated by comparing the expected seasonal heat demand with the amount of surplus thermal energy available for storage. Early calculations should also consider expected storage losses, system efficiency, charging and discharging limits, and a safety margin for demand variations. The result should be treated as an initial estimate and refined later using detailed site and climate data.
